Wildfires in Texas may have destroyed 500 buildings, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said Friday.

Texas officials warned that the threat of the wildfires was not yet over as higher temperatures and stronger winds are expected for Saturday.

These factors may elevate the concerns of Texas officials that the fires could spread beyond the impacted area.

The largest wave of the wildfires, which hit Smokehouse Creek, has killed at least two persons and left behind dozens of burnt homes.

Abbott said: "When you look at the damages that have occurred here it's just gone, completely gone nothing left but ashes on the ground."

Abbott praised what the "heroic" response from "fearless" firefighters, describing: "It would have been far worse and far more damaging not just to property but to people, but for those firefighters."

The National Weather Service forecast warned of strong winds, low humidity, and dry conditions that could boost a "significant" wildfire threat.

Abbott commented: "Everybody needs to understand that we face enormous potential fire dangers as we head into this weekend," adding: "No one can let down their guard. Everyone must remain very vigilant."
