An Indonesian official confirmed that search efforts are continuing for passengers trapped in a minibus buried in mud after floods and landslides struck several locations in North Sumatra province and the death toll rose to at least 27 people.
The Indonesian Disaster Agency announced that the heavy rains that fell in the region since last week caused floods and landslides in four different areas.
Landslides and flash floods damaged homes, mosques and rice fields.
Heavy rains also caused flooding in the regional capital, Medan, delaying voting in the regional elections in some polling stations, local newspaper The Jakarta Post reported.
Indonesia is expected to experience extreme weather by the end of 2024, as the La Nina phenomenon increases rainfall across the tropical archipelago, the Meteorological Agency has warned.
