Lafarge Egypt, member of Holcim Group, took part in the Euromoney Egypt Conference 2022, held in Cairo under the theme “Investing in Resilience and Sustainability”. During the “Financing Energy Transition” session, Ahmed Khalifa, Chief Financial Officer and IT Director of Lafarge Egypt, discussed the company's vision on transition to the energy mix, a strategy that Egypt aims to achieve until 2050, as well as the company's contribution in paving the way towards building a green economy.

Recognized as a leader in the transition towards low-carbon construction by developing and introducing green products and solutions worldwide, Holcim was the first global building materials company to sign the UNGC’s “Business Ambition for 1.5°C” initiative. Moreover, it continues to offer solutions that will accelerate the pace of green transformation in the world through innovative and sustainable building solutions.

“Lafarge Egypt plays the same role on the local level by encouraging both the manufacturers and the users to turn towards green products during the manufacturing and construction process,” Khalifa said. “Achieving this requires regulatory environments and building standards that incentivize greater and faster market uptake of low-carbon products by integrating sustainability performance in building codes, ensuring that construction policies and standards integrate harmonized life cycle assessments for buildings, and integrating lifecycle carbon performance.”

He further elaborated, saying “No single solution will be perfectly scalable everywhere as different environments present different conditions. Thus, we in Lafarge Egypt are promoting and contributing towards transforming into a circular economy; diversifying energy resources from alternative fuels derived from waste, by-products, and biomass.”

Khalifa concluded, indicating the company’s success to reach 20% of alternative fuels use. “We are seeking to raise this percentage up to 50% in the near future.”

The company focuses on offering innovative construction resources and producing eco-friendly cement products like ECOPlanet and Pozzolanic cement, enriched with eco-friendly raw materials that reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 60%, while maintaining the same performance. Lafarge Egypt uses digitization extensively, developing carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies as well as smart ways to deliver products to customers.

With its extensive expertise, Lafarge Egypt is committed to living up to the responsibilities that come with becoming the global leader in innovative and sustainable solutions. It highly focuses on health and safety, whether in its work environment or in the surrounding environment, through a well-established sustainability strategy that contributes to building progress for people and the planet and achieving the global SDGs.
