Lacalle Pou Sworn-in as Uruguay’s New President

Uruguay's new President Luis Lacalle Pou, has promised to cut government spending as well as production and services costs in order to boost his country's domestic economic competitiveness.

In his speech after taking oath, Lacalle has admitted that Uruguay faces “an emergency” of insecurity, adding that “the enormous majority of Uruguayans feel unprotected.”. In the same context, he asserted that he will work to tighten sanctions.

Lacalle Pou said that his policy will be based on accomplishing achievements and correcting past mistakes.

Lacalle Pou Sworn in as Uruguay's new president

Lacalle Pou of the National Party (PN) was sworn in on Sunday as the president of Uruguay for the period of 2020-2025.

"I, Luis Lacalle Pou, swear on my honor to faithfully execute the office that has been entrusted to me, and to guard and defend the Constitution of the Republic," the new president stated in his oath.

The oath of office was administered by senator and former president Jose Mujica (2010-2015).

The same oath of constitutional loyalty was given by the new vice president, Beatriz Argimon, the first woman ever to hold the office.

Lacalle Pou, who spent many years in Uruguay's congress, grew up in an intensely political family.

His father Luis Lacalle Herrera was president from 1990 to 1995 and his mother, Julia Pou, was a senator.

His great-grandfather Luis Alberto de Herrera was a major figure in the National Party.
