An updated tourism plan for the Almaty-Bishkek Economic Corridor (ABEC) was presented in Bishkek. The key focus is on creating a single tourist route between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, according to Akchabar, a partner of TV BRICS.
Among the priorities are the coordinated development of tourism clusters, the promotion of joint routes, and increasing the corridor’s appeal to foreign and regional tourists. To achieve these goals, authorities plan to strengthen cooperation between the parties, consider simplifying border crossing procedures, develop transport infrastructure, and ensure tourists’ comfort throughout the route, according to TV BRICS.
The implementation of the project is expected to create a competitive tourist area between Almaty and Bishkek and contribute to the economic development of both countries.
The tourism development plan was initially approved in 2019, when the key objectives and stages of the project's implementation were also defined. The updated version envisages the development of the corridor as a holistic cross-border destination, where the tourism opportunities of the two countries complement each other.
Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan plan to unite the economic zones around Almaty and Bishkek, which are 240 km apart, into a single space – an economic corridor. The initiative envisages a significant reduction in the time needed to transport goods and passengers, the formation of a common competitive market for medical, educational, and tourist services, as well as the joint sale of agricultural products at regional wholesale markets.
