Kuwaiti Elects New National Assembly Amid Strict Security Measures

Polling committees in the State of Kuwait opened Tuesday morning their doors to voters.

The Kuwaiti electorate is going to choose members of the National Assembly (Parliament) in its legislative chapter No. 17, amid strict security measures.

793 thousand voters are entitled to vote, to choose 50 deputies in a polling process that takes place under the single electoral vote system.

207 candidates, including 10 women, are competing to win the 50 council seats, and they are distributed among 5 constituencies, with 10 deputies in each constituency.

Polling closes at 8:00 pm, and the counting of votes begins in preparation for announcing the official results and naming the winners for membership of the Council for the next four years.

However, the Constitutional Court in Kuwait ruled in mid-March that the 2023 elections were invalid and that the elected parliament would return in 2020.

The Crown Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Mishaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, announced late May the dissolution of the parliament, which was restored by the Constitutional Court, and the call for new elections.
