Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov affirmed, on Monday, that it welcomed the Vatican's offer to provide a negotiating platform to resolve the Ukraine conflict, but that Kyiv's position made this impossible.
"Of course, we welcome such political will, but given the de facto and de jure situation that we now have on the Ukrainian side, such platforms cannot be in demand," Peskov told reporters.
In an interview with the Italian daily La Stampa, Pope Francis reiterated that the Vatican was ready to do anything possible to mediate and put an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Peskov has previously stressed that President Vladimir Putin has been open to talks on Ukraine from the very beginning.
"Putin, in fact, has been open to talks from the very beginning. The president has repeatedly said so himself," the Kremlin spokesman noted.
Moreover, he revealed that the Russian leader had tried to initiate talks with NATO, the US, and the OSCE even before the special military operation began.
"Putin was open to talks when the text of the document between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators was actually agreed upon. So here, in this respect, nothing has changed," Peskov indicated.
