Kosovo's health authorities have confirmed the country’s first case of monkeypox, discovered in a man who recently returned from Africa.
According to the Kosovo Public Health Institute, the 30-year-old patient was hospitalized on December 24 after returning from a West African country, although the specific nation has not been named.
The man presented symptoms including fever, chills, and skin changes on his face and hands. The institute assured the public that his condition appears to be stable.
In response to the case, health officials have traced all contacts of the patient and have informed them of the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.
The World Health Organization (WHO) had declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency in August, as a new strain of the virus spread from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to neighboring countries.
In late November, the WHO reiterated that the monkeypox outbreak remains an ongoing health emergency.
