North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited the Ministry of Public Security on Tuesday to mark the 80th anniversary of the country’s public security organ, according to state media.

Kim, who serves as general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and president of the State Affairs Commission, used the occasion to congratulate and encourage officers and personnel of the Public Security Forces (PSF), the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

He was accompanied by senior officials, including Jo Yong Won, a secretary of the WPK Central Committee; Kim Hyong Sik, a department director at the Party’s Central Committee; and Kang Yun Sok, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly.

Upon his arrival at the ministry, Kim was greeted by Minister Pang Tu Sop and other senior security officials. KCNA said security personnel welcomed him with “enthusiastic cheers.”

During the visit, Kim delivered a congratulatory message to mark the eight decades since the founding of the public security organ. He praised the PSF for what he described as their longstanding role in defending the country’s political system, ensuring social stability, and supporting the goals of the ruling party.

Kim emphasized what he called the “honorable mission” of the public security forces, stressing that their duties include safeguarding the activities of the Party and the government and upholding the country’s socialist system.

He also highlighted the history of the PSF, saying their contributions had formed a “strong fortress” around the Workers’ Party throughout major periods of struggle, according to the report. Kim urged the forces to continue strengthening ideological discipline, combat readiness, and loyalty to the Party.

KCNA said Kim called on members of the PSF to remain committed to the “people-first principle” and to further develop their capabilities as political and ideological cadres.

Following his remarks, Kim posed for a commemorative photo with ministry officials. The report said participants reaffirmed their loyalty to the leadership and vowed to intensify efforts to fulfill their mission.

The anniversary comes as North Korea continues to prioritize internal security and ideological cohesion amid ongoing economic challenges and heightened tensions with the United States and South Korea.
