Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and President of the State Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), paid a solemn and congratulatory visit to the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang on May 9, marking the 80th anniversary of Russia’s victory in the Great Patriotic War.

In a formal speech delivered during the visit, Kim praised the Russian people for their indomitable spirit, heroic sacrifices, and historic contribution to the defeat of fascism in World War II. He hailed the Soviet Union’s wartime generation as defenders of not only their homeland but also global peace and human civilization.

“Had great Russia not destroyed fascist Germany at the cost of lives of tens of millions, there would be no modern civilization nor our happy life today,” Kim said. “The Russian people are a symbol of steadfastness, justice, and sacrifice.”

Kim lauded President Vladimir Putin as his “closest friend and comrade,” and described the Russian armed forces and people as “descendants of the legendary victorious generation,” now once again taking on the responsibility of defending global peace amid rising geopolitical tensions.

He also commemorated the shared history between Russia and Korea, pointing to the liberation of Korea in August 1945 as intrinsically linked to the Soviet victory. “May 9 is not only a Russian holiday—it is a day of celebration for all mankind, including the Korean people,” he said.

Highlighting the growing strategic partnership between Pyongyang and Moscow, Kim referred to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty signed in June 2024, calling it a milestone that reaffirmed the nations’ resolve to stand together as allies. He said the treaty symbolizes a “blood-sealed alliance” and a commitment to mutual defense.

Kim also expressed full support for Russia’s ongoing military operations in Ukraine, describing them as a continuation of the righteous fight against fascist forces. He confirmed that DPRK military units had been deployed to support Russian troops in Kursk, calling the joint efforts a demonstration of "militant friendship and fraternal solidarity."

“The most excellent sons of our people fought alongside Russian soldiers in the same trenches,” Kim noted. “Their courage proved the depth and durability of our alliance.”

He condemned what he called the “revival of Nazism” and warned that DPRK would not hesitate to act militarily under the terms of the treaty if Russian territory faced further provocation.

As he concluded, Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his admiration for the Russian people, calling them a "nation of victors" and expressing confidence in their future under President Putin’s leadership.

“Russia will forever be hailed as a standard-bearer of justice and a defender of a multipolar world. Long live the great day of victory! Long live the eternal DPRK-Russia friendship!”
