Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, has erupted again in Hawaii, releasing large volumes of lava on Monday, according to scientists.

Volcanologists at the United States Geological Survey said glowing lava was ejected more than 460 metres into the air, while plumes of smoke and volcanic gases rose to heights of up to six kilometres.

Kilauea has been erupting regularly for more than a year following renewed activity in December 2024, during which it has released thousands of tonnes of molten rock and volcanic gases. The USGS said similar eruptive episodes typically last around a day but can emit as much as 100,000 tonnes of sulphur dioxide.

Officials stressed that the latest eruption poses no immediate threat to nearby communities. The summit crater has been closed to the public for nearly two decades as a precaution due to persistent volcanic activity.

Kilauea has remained highly active since 1983 and is known for its frequent eruptions. It is one of six active volcanoes in the Hawaiian Islands, which also include Mauna Loa, the largest volcano on the planet.

Scientists continue to closely monitor the eruption, as Kilauea’s ongoing activity plays a significant role in shaping Hawaii’s landscape while highlighting the powerful geological forces beneath the Pacific region.
