Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, assistant secretary-general and head of the media and communication sector at the League of Arab States, said Saturday that ensuring a pluralistic, independent and credible media environment is essential to informing public opinion and safeguarding rights.
In a statement marking World Press Freedom Day, Khattabi praised recent updates to the Arab media code of ethics that promote diversity, freedom of expression and combat misinformation, particularly during elections.
He described the occasion, established by the United Nations in 1993, as an opportunity to honor journalists and support their role in development and democracy.
Khattabi also warned of challenges posed by digital platforms and artificial intelligence, citing the spread of online violence and false content, and called for strengthening media literacy across Arab countries.
