The British lawyer of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi Karim Khan was elected as the new chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday. He will succeed the current Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda.
He will assume the presidency of the court for a period of nine years, beginning on the sixteenth of next June, after winning Friday in a secret ballot among three other candidates for the position.
He had taken over the defense of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and Al-Baghdadi Al-Mahmoudi. He was also known as a principal defense advisor who worked in Kenya, Sudan and Libya cases in the International Criminal Court.
The President of the Assembly of States Parties, O-Gon Kwon, applauded Mr. Khan on Twitter, saying “Warm congratulations! Thank you all for your hard work!!”
