Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency quoted Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Sunday stating that any U.S. attack on his country would escalate into a regional conflict.
Khamenei added, "Talk of war and military mobilization against us is not new; Iran has historically faced such events."
He continued: "We are not the initiators of any war and we do not seek to attack any country, but the Iranian people will deliver a powerful blow to anyone who commits aggression against them."
The Supreme Leader’s remarks came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at the possibility of reaching an agreement with Iran to avoid military strikes.
This follows Washington’s decision to bolster its military presence in the Middle East by deploying a naval strike group, led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, off the Iranian coast.
In an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Trump stated that Iran is talking "seriously" with the United States, suggesting that both countries are attempting to negotiate a deal.
However, he noted that "the United States cannot share its military plans with its regional allies for security reasons."
