Khamenei: US's Animosity Won't End with Trump's Departure

The Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned on Wednesday that Washington's hostility towards Tehran will not end with the departure of the outgoing US President Donald Trump and Joe Biden assuming his responsibilities.

In press statements, Khamenei renewed the call to work locally to neutralize the impact of the harsh economic sanctions imposed by the United States. He stressed the need not to delay if there is an opportunity to lift these sanctions.

In 2015, Iran concluded an agreement with the major powers regarding its nuclear program, which led to the lifting of many of the sanctions imposed on it.

In return, Iran pledged to ensure the peacefulness of its nuclear activities. But Trump unilaterally withdrew in 2018 from the agreement signed under his predecessor Barack Obama and re-imposed tough economic sanctions on Iran.

Khamenei said: "You have seen what Trump`s America did to you, and what Obama`s America did to you."

"Hostilities are not limited to Trump's America, and will not end with his departure," scheduled for January 20, with Biden swearing-in," he added.

It is worth mentioning that senior diplomats from Iran and major powers are meeting online on Wednesday to discuss the status of their nuclear deal, which is fading despite conciliatory signals from US President-elect Joe Biden.

Diplomats said the consultations were aimed at preparing for future talks between the foreign ministers of Iran, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and China.

The 2015 nuclear deal aims to prevent Tehran from storing uranium that could be used to build nuclear weapons. In return, the major powers promised to end Tehran’s economic isolation by lifting sanctions.

US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal and reinstated US sanctions in 2018. A year later, Tehran began abandoning key provisions of the deal.
