American actor and comedian Kevin Hart is recovering after undergoing back surgery following his car accident near Calabasas, California that took place on Sunday.

The comedian underwent surgery for "major back injuries" suffered during the accident.

He is expected to make a full recovery, however, TMZ reports that he will need months of rehabilitation before he is in top shape.

Sources close to Hart told TMZ that the actor is expected to be released from the hospital by the end of the week.

However, he'll have a heavy physical therapy workload in the coming weeks, along with a steady schedule of follow-up doctors appointments.

The 40-year-old actor has been hospitalized after he was badly injured in the accident.

He was a passenger in his 1970 Plymouth Barracuda — which he bought to himself back in July as a 40th birthday gift — when the driver, friend Jared Black, lost control and veered off the road in the hills above Malibu.

The actor and two others were involved in the accident, according to a California Highway Patrol incident report obtained by CNN.

Two of the three occupants were trapped in the vehicle. Hart left the scene to his nearby residence to get medical attention.

Patrol officers determined that Black was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.

The third occupant did not suffer any substantial injuries.

Photos have emerged showing the frightening extent to the actor's smashed car, which also featured its roof sheared above the passenger compartment.

The New York Daily News quoting a California Highway Patrol spokesman reported that investigators are eyeing excessive speed as a possible cause of the crash.

Moreover, the actor's wife, Eniko Parrish, also provided an update on the actor's current health and condition.

“He’s good, everybody’s good. Thank God,” Parrish told TMZ outside the hospital where Hart was treated. “He’s fine, he’s awake.”

Hart will reportedly remain at the hospital for a few days until he has recovered.

He is currently resting up with his loved ones by his side.
