The Kenyan Ministry of Education has announced the closure of 348 boarding schools across the country following a thorough safety audit conducted over the past two months.
The decision comes in the wake of a tragic fire in early September at the Endarasha boarding school in central Kenya, which claimed the lives of 21 students and sparked widespread public outrage.
The audit revealed critical safety lapses in many schools, including a lack of emergency exits, inadequate fire-fighting equipment, and overcrowded dormitories.
In some cases, bunk beds were placed less than a meter apart, creating hazardous living conditions.
