Security forces announced on Monday that at least 45 people have died as a result of floods caused by torrential rains that have swept across Kenya.
Police had reported on Saturday that at least 23 people had died in the capital, Nairobi, alone, while rescue teams continued to recover bodies and provide assistance to those trapped.
The Kenyan newspaper, The Standard, quoted a government official as saying that 26 people had died in the capital, more than 50,000 had been displaced across the country, and a number of people were missing.
In a brief statement on Monday, Kenyan police spokesman Michael Muchiri reported that 2,224 people had been displaced and 45 drownings had been recorded nationwide, without providing further details.
