Nairobi’s congested streets, dominated by over 22,000 diesel buses, are seeing a green revolution with the introduction of electric buses by Kenyan company BasiGo.
Currently operating 35 electric buses, with 14 more expected by the end of 2024, the initiative is a significant step toward reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
Drivers and passengers alike are embracing the quieter, faster, and more comfortable electric buses.
To overcome high upfront costs, BasiGo offers a leasing program, enabling operators to adopt these vehicles with manageable monthly payments.
While charging infrastructure and costs remain barriers, the Kenyan government supports the transition through tax incentives and reduced electricity tariffs.
The goal is to have at least 5% of vehicles electric by 2025, contributing to a 32% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030
