Conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori has narrowly won Peru’s presidential election following a lengthy vote count, according to the country’s electoral authorities.

Fujimori, 51, secured 50.13% of the vote, defeating left-wing rival Roberto Sánchez, who received 49.86%. The final margin was just 49,641 votes, with the result announced more than three weeks after the June 7 runoff election.

In a post on X, Fujimori said she would await the official certification of the results by Peru’s National Elections Jury in the coming days with "humility, wisdom, and responsibility."

"We are getting closer to beginning a new chapter of order and hope for all Peruvians," she wrote.

Sánchez has previously said he would not recognize the election outcome.

Fujimori is the daughter of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who was convicted of human rights abuses. She is scheduled to take office on July 28.

The election comes amid continued political instability in Peru, where tensions between Congress and the presidency have led to frequent leadership changes. Congress has the power to remove presidents on grounds of "moral incapacity," and the country has seen eight presidents take office over the past decade.
