Kazakhstan is moving ahead with an ambitious aviation infrastructure expansion plan that includes the construction of four new airports as part of a broader effort to strengthen its transport and transit capabilities.

The initiative was reviewed at a government meeting chaired by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, who stressed the importance of modernizing infrastructure, introducing digital solutions, and increasing the transport sector’s contribution to the national economy.

According to official plans, 11 major infrastructure projects are expected to be completed by 2028. These include four new airports, two additional runways, and upgrades to existing facilities across five cities.

Kazakhstan also plans to expand its international air connectivity to 135 routes across 30 countries, reinforcing its position as a regional aviation and logistics hub, according to Kazinform.

Data from the Ministry of Transport shows that gross output in the transport and storage sector reached about US$24.4 billion by the end of 2025, with growth accelerating by 12.8 percent in the first quarter of 2026. In addition, four major road projects totaling 2,000 kilometers were completed in 2025.

A further boost to the sector has come from a reduction in domestic aviation fuel prices to around US$800 per ton, helping attract new foreign carriers and improve operational competitiveness.

Across the wider BRICS and partner economies, aviation expansion is also accelerating. India has announced plans to develop more than 400 airports by 2047, while Ethiopia is expanding regional airfields to improve accessibility and boost tourism. Meanwhile, Vietnam is targeting 33 airports by 2030 as part of a major infrastructure investment strategy worth around US$20 billion.
