Kazakhstan has unveiled an ambitious national strategy to transform itself into Central Asia’s premier technology powerhouse, with plans to expand digital infrastructure, boost IT exports, and strengthen innovation across key industries.

According to TV BRICS, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov announced the initiative this week, outlining a comprehensive roadmap that prioritizes artificial intelligence, startup development, and advanced digital services as engines of future economic growth.

Under the new plan, the government aims to increase IT exports to $1 billion by 2025, while enhancing cooperation with global partners and investors to drive technological competitiveness.

As part of the reforms, Kazakhstan has established a Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development, which will oversee digital policy, regulatory frameworks, and coordination among public and private stakeholders.

The initiative also includes the creation of a national AI research center, startup accelerator programs, and new funding mechanisms designed to help emerging tech companies access international markets.

Kazakhstan’s strong performance in global digital rankings has bolstered confidence in its ability to lead the region’s tech transformation. The country currently ranks 24th worldwide in e-government and 10th in online public services, reflecting significant progress in digital governance and innovation.

Prime Minister Bektenov said the plan represents a strategic shift toward a knowledge-driven economy:

“Our goal is to build a competitive and dynamic digital ecosystem that fosters innovation, attracts investment, and creates opportunities for the next generation of Kazakh talent,” he stated.

Experts note that while Kazakhstan’s vision is ambitious, achieving it will require sustained investment in education, infrastructure, and regulatory stability. If successful, analysts say, the initiative could not only diversify the country’s economy beyond its resource base but also position it as a central player in the global technology landscape.

The strategy underscores Kazakhstan’s growing determination to redefine its role in the digital age — evolving from a resource exporter to a regional leader in innovation and technology.
