Emhoff’s two looks, a jewel-encrusted Miu Miu coat and a merlot-coloured Batsheva dress, went viral on social media during the televised ceremony.

“It is intimidating and scary to go into this world that is hyperfocused on you and [your] body,” Emhoff told the New York Times.

“I was pretty surprised when everything with IMG was happening because when I was younger I never saw that as being part of my timeline,” she added.

Now, the 22-year-old girl, who has described herself as having “really weird tattoos and kind of a funky haircut”, joins the inauguration poet Amanda Gorman at the agency.

Many people supported the agency’s choice, believing that she is funny and exceptionally beautiful.

“Ella communicates this moment in time. There’s a cheekiness and a joy she exudes,” President of IMG Models Ivan Bart said, noting that when he saw her at the inauguration, he thought, “Wow, she’s communicating fashion.”

Speaking about her choice of outfit prior to Wednesday's inauguration, she told Vogue magazine that she had prepared her outfit expecting there to be "some anticipation" surrounding her and her family's fashion choices.

"My mood board was very 'little girl,' in a sense, a lot of scalloped collars and big silhouette shoulders and small buttons," she was quoted as saying in an interview alongside Batsheva's founder, Batsheva Hay.

"I was going for something girlier, to embrace my feminine side ... because, like, how many times do you prepare yourself to attend an inauguration? This momentous of an event deserves a momentous outfit."
