British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called on Scottish nationalists to stop talking indefinitely about holding another referendum on independence from the United Kingdom (UK).
He stressed that he doesn’t think it is the right thing to do is to talk endlessly about another referendum when he sees that what the country and the people of Scotland in particular want is to fight this pandemic.
Johnson paid an abrupt visit to Scotland today, Thursday.
On the other hand, the Scottish Prime Minister, Nicolas Sturgeon, has been calling for months to hold a new referendum on self-determination to attain independence from the UK.
Opinion polls indicate that independents will win this referendum, which the Prime Minister intends to organize after the Corona pandemic if the local elections that will be held in May lead to an independent majority in the Scottish Parliament.
The polls suggest that the Scottish National Party will achieve a big victory in this poll.
Johnson strongly opposes a new referendum in Scotland, noting that its citizens voted 55 percent in 2014 to remain in the United Kingdom.
But Nicola Sturgeon, Prime Minister of Scotland, has said that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is afraid of democracy when it comes to the Scottish independence referendum from London.
She considered that Johnson "fears democracy", as she put it in an interview with her, "BBC" British television, calling on the British Prime Minister to enable the Scots to determine their fate.
Sturgeon's party, the Scottish Nationalist Party, plans to organize a referendum to secede from Britain in the event that it wins the Scottish regional elections next May.
"The only point I would like to make is that, as my first-hand experience in this country reveals, referendums are not particularly enjoyable events," Johnson said in an interview with the BBC.
