US President Joe Biden and First Lady have announced the death of their German Shepherd dog "Champ", after 13 years together, when Biden was vice president.

"Our family lost our loving companion Champ today. I will miss him," President Biden wrote on Twitter.

Champ was one of two German Shepherds living in the White House with the Biden family, along with "Major".

"In our happiest moments and our saddest days, he was there with us, sensitive to all of our silent feelings and affection. We love our beautiful, kind boy and will always miss him," Biden said in a statement.

"Even as Champ's strength waned in his final months, when we got into a room, he would pull himself on the spot, always wagging his tail, and quenching us with ear scratching or belly rubs. Wherever we were, he wanted to be, everything was instantly better when he was next to us."

In his younger days, Champ was "happiest chasing golf balls in the front lawn of the Naval Observatory or racing to catch our grandchildren running around the Delaware backyard," Biden added.
