Former US President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, his office confirmed on Sunday.

The 82-year-old underwent medical testing after reporting difficulty urinating, which led doctors to discover a prostate nodule. The cancer, diagnosed on Friday, has already metastasized to his bones.

While the diagnosis presents a serious health concern, Biden’s medical team noted that the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive.

This offers the potential for effective disease management. His family is currently consulting with doctors to determine the best course of treatment.

Prostate cancers are classified by aggressiveness using the Gleason scoring system, which ranges from 6 to 10.

A score of 8 or higher indicates a more dangerous and fast-spreading cancer. Biden’s Gleason score was 9, placing him in the high-risk category.

Prostate cancer that spreads beyond the prostate typically targets the bones, making treatment significantly more complex.

Once the disease becomes metastatic, it is harder for therapies to reach all cancer cells, which complicates full recovery.

The news sparked an outpouring of support from political figures across the country.

President Donald Trump, Biden’s longtime political rival and the current occupant of the White House, shared a message on social media expressing sadness over the diagnosis and wishing Biden a full and speedy recovery.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who served alongside Biden and later ran unsuccessfully against Trump after Biden ended his reelection campaign, also extended her thoughts, saying her family is keeping him in their hearts and prayers.

Former President Barack Obama praised Biden’s strength and determination, highlighting his years of advocacy for cancer research.

Obama noted that no one has done more to push for advanced cancer treatments than Biden and expressed confidence that he would face this challenge with resilience and grace.
