Chinese President Xi Jinping and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, held a high-level telephone conversation on April 20, 2026. The discussion centered on deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations and addressing the urgent security challenges currently facing the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz.
A Decade of Strategic Partnership
President Xi highlighted that China views its relationship with Saudi Arabia as a diplomatic priority, built on mutual respect and shared benefits. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the China-Saudi Arabia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, a milestone President Xi believes should be used to propel bilateral cooperation to new heights.
"China is ready to work with Saudi Arabia to deepen strategic mutual trust and expand practical cooperation across all levels," Xi stated, noting that the relationship serves as a model for China's broader engagement with the Arab world.
Escalation Concerns in the Middle East
Amidst ongoing regional tensions, President Xi issued a firm call for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire. He emphasized that China remains committed to political and diplomatic solutions to resolve conflicts, urging the international community to support efforts that restore peace.
A critical point of the discussion was the Strait of Hormuz. Xi stressed that maintaining normal passage through the vital waterway is in the collective interest of regional nations and the global economy. He reiterated China's support for regional states to take control of their own destinies and build a "shared home" characterized by security and cooperation.
Saudi Arabia’s Stance on Energy and Security
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman echoed the strategic importance of the relationship, noting that the ongoing instability in the Middle East directly threatens Gulf security, global energy supplies, and the world economy.
"The Kingdom is dedicated to resolving differences through dialogue and avoiding further escalation," the Crown Prince stated. He praised China’s role as a "responsible major power" and its commitment to a fair and just position in international affairs.
Joint Commitment to Maritime Safety
Both leaders pledged to enhance coordination to maintain truces and prevent the resurgence of conflict. They specifically committed to ensuring the security and freedom of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, recognizing its role as a global energy artery.
The call concluded with a mutual agreement to continue seeking long-term pathways toward lasting peace and security in the region.
