Japan’s citizen population fell to 120.3 million as of October 2024, marking a record annual decline of 898,000 people, according to official government data released Monday.

This is the largest drop since comparable statistics began in 1950, reflecting the nation’s deepening demographic crisis fueled by a persistently low birthrate.

Including foreign nationals, Japan’s total population stood at 123.8 million, down by 550,000 from the previous year, marking the 14th consecutive annual decline.

Out of Japan’s 47 prefectures, only Tokyo and Saitama recorded population growth. Akita Prefecture, located in northern Honshu, experienced the steepest decline.

Japan’s population has been shrinking steadily since peaking in 2008, posing significant challenges to its economy, labor market, and social services.

The government attributes the declining birthrate to economic pressures faced by young people, making it difficult for them to start families.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi acknowledged the trend during a press briefing, emphasizing the government’s efforts to improve conditions for young families. Measures include raising wages for younger workers and expanding childcare support to create a more secure environment for raising children.

Despite seeking to supplement its workforce with young foreign laborers, Japan maintains strict immigration controls, allowing foreign workers to stay only temporarily.
