Official statistics published by Japan’s government revealed that the population of the country decreased significantly to 126.65 million since January this year.
The Japanese population registered a bigger decrease within eight years which reflects a decline of foreigners residing in Japan owing to the more strict measurements due to the Coronavirus.
Data released by the Ministry of Interior Affairs in Japan pointed out that the population is estimated at 126.65 million which decreased by 483 thousand of 38% compared to the previous year.
This decrease is the biggest since 2013 when the demographics in Japan started including the foreigners who reside in Japan.
The number of the Japanese continues to decline for the 12th year in a row.
It is worth noting that the deaths in Japan exceeded the births according to the Japan Times, a daily English-spoken newspaper.
The new births in Japan decreased to a new standard level that hit 843 thousand but deaths reached 1.374 million, however, it declined slightly compared to the previous year.
Forty- two prefectures out of forty-seven ones in Japan suffered from a noticeable decrease in population.
On the contrary, Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, and neighboring prefectures recorded an increase in population.
However, a Japanese official said that the new infections with COVID-19 in Tokyo rose to 5000 confirmed cases today, Thursday for the first time since the outbreak of the disease, warning that the deadly virus puts the medical system in Japan under heavy pressure.
