Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is reportedly preparing to nominate former US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, according to Japan’s NTV channel citing government sources on Tuesday.
The report said that Takaichi is currently arranging to inform Trump of her intention to put his name forward.
Trump received an enthusiastic welcome in Japan on Monday, the latest stop on his five-day tour across Asia. The visit is expected to play a key role in efforts to secure a potential truce in the ongoing US-China trade war, with Trump hoping to reach an understanding with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
During what is his longest overseas trip since taking office in January, Trump announced a series of trade deals with four Southeast Asian countries, starting with Malaysia. His tour is scheduled to conclude in South Korea, where he is due to meet Xi on Thursday.
The anticipated Nobel Peace Prize nomination underscores Japan’s diplomatic efforts to strengthen its relations with Washington while promoting stability and cooperation across the Asia-Pacific region.
