Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said Monday that he hopes to work with the new U.S. President Joe Biden to strengthen the security alliance with the United States.
In press statements, Suga added that he is looking forward to enhancing the cooperation with the United States to "secure the peace and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region.
Many Japanese officials believe that an in-person meeting between leaders should wait until the President-elect takes office on Jan. 20, partly out of deference to the incumbent President, Donald Trump.
Suga's comments followed his tweet on Sunday, offering Biden and his running mate Kamala Harris "warm congratulations."
