The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has announced plans to deliver emergency relief supplies to Cuba in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Rafael.

The assistance follows a formal request from the Cuban government after the island faced multiple natural disasters in recent weeks.

Hurricane Rafael struck Cuba on November 6, compounding the effects of Hurricane Oscar, which hit in late October, and a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake that shook the southeastern region on November 10.

These consecutive disasters have severely impacted the nation, with United Nations estimates indicating over 530,000 people affected, eight fatalities, and two individuals still missing. Additionally, more than 23,000 homes and 109 schools have been damaged or destroyed.

The hurricanes and earthquake have also disrupted essential infrastructure. Reports indicate that 178 medical facilities in Artemisa, Havana, Mayabeque, and the national district sustained damage, alongside water supply systems, pipelines, and power grids.

Many regions are currently grappling with widespread power outages and water shortages.

In its relief package, Japan will supply critical items, including tents, blankets, sleeping mats, and water purification devices. These supplies will be transported from JICA’s warehouse in Singapore to Havana via air freight.
