Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stated on Wednesday he is considering visiting Ukraine following an invitation from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"Nothing has been decided at this time regarding my visit to Ukraine," Kishida told parliament. "I will consider this in light of various circumstances and conditions."

Kishida had talks with Zelenskyy several times but they have not met in person. The Ukrainian leader invited his Japanese counterpart to visit during a call on January 6.

The trip marks the first time a Japanese prime minister visits a country during an active conflict.

Leaders of the international group of seven (G7) countries, including the US, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, and the UK, met Zelenskyy in Kyiv or elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni did not visit Kyiv but her predecessor met the Ukrainian leader.

Japan will host the G7 summit in Hiroshima in May, and Ukraine’s crisis is expected to be high on the agenda.
