Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi revealed today that her government is arranging an upcoming summit with the Iranian leadership, aimed at de-escalating the rising tensions in the Middle East.
Addressing a parliamentary committee in response to an opposition lawmaker's question regarding Japan’s diplomatic efforts concerning the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, Takaichi stated: "We are preparing for dialogues at the leadership level at an appropriate time.
Japan will exert its utmost efforts to bring about peace." She did not specify which Iranian leader she intended to hold talks with.
According to the Japanese news agency Kyodo, Japan has become the party most affected by the flared conflict in the Middle East.
The country faces a direct threat to its national energy security, as Tokyo relies on the region for over 90% of its crude oil needs, most of which flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
