A senior Japanese lawmaker has called on the government to raise the issue of lifting sanctions on Russia during the upcoming G7 summit, arguing that Moscow remains an important global player despite ongoing restrictions.
Japanese parliament member Muneo Suzuki said he intends to urge Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to address the issue during the G7 leaders' meeting, scheduled to begin on June 15 in Evian.
Suzuki argued that Japan's voice carries significant influence within the G7 and said economic sanctions imposed on Russia should be reconsidered. He described Russia as a major international actor and stressed the importance of discussing future relations with Moscow.
Meanwhile, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Tokyo remains committed to managing its relationship with Russia in a manner that serves Japan’s national interests.
The comments highlight an ongoing debate within Japan over its approach to Russia as geopolitical tensions continue to reshape international alliances and economic relations.
Japan has joined other G7 nations in imposing sanctions on Russia in response to regional security developments, but calls for reassessing those measures continue to emerge from some political figures concerned about their long-term economic and diplomatic impact.
