On Monday, Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said his country will host an online Group of Seven (G7) summit meeting on Friday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"In order for the leaders of the G7 nations to remain united in dealing with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I have decided to host a videoconference for them to which President Zelensky is invited this week on February 24," he said during a speech in Tokyo.

Kishida noted that Japan also plans to pledge another $5.5 billion in aid to Ukraine.

Japan's Kyodo news agency wrote that the meeting aims to reaffirm Ukraine's support, continue sanctions against Russia and show the group's unity.
