Japan issued a tsunami warning on Sunday following a 6.7-magnitude earthquake that struck off the northern Pacific coast, prompting authorities to urge residents to move away from coastal areas.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake occurred offshore near Iwate Prefecture, triggering a tsunami alert with waves expected to reach up to one meter in height.
Public broadcaster NHK reported that a tsunami wave had already been observed about 70 kilometers off the coast of Iwate and was expected to reach the Pacific shoreline shortly.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also recorded a 6.26-magnitude earthquake off the eastern coast of Honshu, Japan’s largest island, which includes Iwate Prefecture.
Authorities have called on residents in coastal zones to remain vigilant and follow evacuation instructions until the tsunami threat has passed.
