The Government of Japan has announced the conferment of the Order of the Rising Sun, Grand Cordon upon Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States. The award, bestowed by the Emperor of Japan, HM Naruhito, recognizes Aboul Gheit’s outstanding contributions to fostering strong ties and mutual understanding between Japan and both Egypt and the broader Arab world.
In a statement, the Embassy of Japan in Egypt extended its heartfelt congratulations to Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit on receiving this prestigious honor. The Embassy also expressed its profound appreciation for his longstanding efforts in fostering bilateral and regional ties, reaffirming its commitment to further advancing Japan-Egypt and Japan-Arab relations.
During his tenure as Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2004 to 2011, Aboul Gheit played a pivotal role in strengthening Japan-Egypt relations.
He was instrumental in elevating the bilateral strategic dialogue to the ministerial level, laying the foundation for the establishment of a Strategic Partnership between the two nations in 2023.
He also championed key development initiatives, including support for the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)—a landmark symbol of Japan-Egypt cooperation—and the establishment of the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST), a flagship institution in educational collaboration.
Since taking office as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States in 2016, Aboul Gheit has remained a strong advocate for Japan-Arab relations. His leadership has helped launch and promote the Japan-Arab Political Dialogue, which has convened three sessions to date, serving as a platform for deeper mutual engagement.
