In a significant move to bolster specialized healthcare in Upper Egypt, the Government of Japan has announced a new partnership with the renowned Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation (MYF).
On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Mr. Iwai Fumio, Ambassador of Japan to Egypt, signed a grant contract with representatives of the Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation. The funding is provided through the Japanese Government’s program for Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (Kusanone).
Strengthening Intensive Care Units (ICU)
The grant, totaling $51,745 USD, is specifically earmarked to equip the Foundation’s Intensive Care Unit with essential medical technology. The primary goal is to enhance the delivery of advanced cardiac services to patients facing financial hardships in the southern region of the country.
The Aswan Heart Centre, operated by MYF, is a cornerstone of Egyptian healthcare, providing state-of-the-art heart surgeries entirely free of charge. To date, the center has:
Treated over 40,000 patients.
Performed approximately 1,500 surgeries annually.
Operated at maximum capacity to meet the high demand for life-saving interventions.
Tackling Waiting Lists with Advanced Tech
Despite its tireless efforts, the Aswan Heart Centre continues to face extensive waiting lists. To address this, the Japanese Embassy is providing:
A Cardiovascular Ultrasound Diagnostic System for high-precision imaging.
Five ICU beds to increase patient intake.
Two Ventilator Circuit Support Arms to aid in critical respiratory care.
These additions are expected to significantly reduce surgical wait times and elevate the overall quality of medical services in Upper Egypt.
The Impact of "Kusanone" in Egypt
The "Kusanone" program is a vital pillar of Japan’s developmental cooperation, offering direct financial support to NGOs and non-profit organizations to meet localized community needs.
Since its launch in Egypt in 1994, Japan has contributed over $11 million USD through the program. This initiative marks the 182nd project supported by the Japanese Embassy in Egypt and the 39th project specifically targeting the development of Upper Egypt.
