The Japan Foundation in Cairo is set to present a show of Japanese dolls, entitled "Incarnation", on its YouTube channel starting from March 17 at 4 p.m. until March 21.

“Puppet shows are very popular in Egypt, especially among children, but this Japanese doll show addresses adults. The show's story is based on an ancient Japanese myth entitled "Kamikokoshi" or "Kidnapped by God". It is what is said to happen when a person disappears or dies in a mysterious way, as it was believed that one of the gods or spirits kidnapped the person to a hidden place,” the foundation’s statement read.

The Yumihina Theater is known for the use of masks and human-sized dolls that resemble traditional Japanese dolls. The puppeteers wear masks and take part in the performance with the dolls as independent people on stage.

This style blends well with the rich nature and atmosphere of traditional places such as Shinto and Buddhist temples.

More to know about the Performance “Incarnation”

It is a filmed theatrical performance, based on one of the Japanese Folklore stories "Spirited Away" and it is an original story made by Mr. Okamoto Hoichi, the Master of Dondoro THEATER.

"Incarnation" is a Buddhist word denoting when gods and spirits appear in human figures or in

a temporary form instead of their original forms.

According to folklore “spirited away”, when a person suddenly goes missing one day. It was thought to be due to the act of gods, snatching the person.

In our performance "incarnation", the puppet artist is presenting the story from her own perspective with a unique sense of warmth and beauty.
