Japan: Female Suicide Rate Rises for Second Year in Row

Suicide rates increased among females last year 2021 for the second year in a row, due to the Coronavirus epidemic, according to Japanese government data.

The data reported by Kyodo News said that the number of women committed suicide in Japan reached 7,068 during the past year 2021, adding that with the decrease in suicide rates among men. The total number of suicide in the country decreased to 21,007 cases.

“It seems that the impact of Coronavirus appears in different ways,” an official specializing in suicide prevention measures at the Japanese Ministry of Health, referring to the causes of suicide among women, to several reasons.

The most common reason is “health issues”, which amounted to 4,375 cases, a decrease of 144 from 2020. The second most common reason is “family problems”, such as marital discord and pessimism about the future of the family, which amounted to 1,357 cases, an increase of 65 cases from 2020.
