Japan's disaster management officials said Monday that heavy snow in separate parts of the country has so far killed 17 people and left more than 90 others injured, while causing power outage to hundreds of homes.

US "ABC News" network quoted the Fire and Disaster Management Agency as saying that increased snowfall during the Christmas holiday caused the death toll to rise to 17 while 93 were injured, as of Monday morning.

Heavy snowfall in the northern regions since last week has left hundreds of vehicles stranded on highways, and dozens of casualties.

Noteworthy, the heavy snowfall caused the cancellation of a number of flights in Japan.
