Italian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani has issued an urgent advisory for Italian nationals currently in Iran to depart the country immediately.

Speaking on Thursday regarding the escalating instability in the region, Tajani announced that Italy will significantly reduce its embassy staff in Tehran. "Only essential personnel required for the smooth functioning of diplomatic operations will remain," the minister clarified.

A Call for Diplomacy Over Force Despite the drawdown, Tajani expressed hope that a military confrontation could be avoided. He noted that Italy does not currently anticipate "decisive military action" from the United States and remains committed to finding a resolution through diplomatic channels.

"Dialogue is always useful," Tajani emphasized, explaining why Italy has chosen not to sever diplomatic ties entirely. He argued that maintaining a presence in Tehran allows Italy the opportunity to negotiate and potentially persuade Iranian authorities to adopt more moderate stances toward domestic opposition.

EU Coordination and Sanctions Italy is actively monitoring the situation and plans to discuss further initiatives with the European Union. These discussions may include the imposition of potential sanctions as part of a coordinated European response to the ongoing crisis in Iran.

As the geopolitical situation in the Middle East remains volatile, Italy’s move to evacuate non-essential staff reflects a growing concern among Western allies regarding the safety of their citizens and the future of diplomatic engagement with the Iranian government.
