Italy has announced plans to deploy advanced artificial intelligence systems to protect its cultural heritage, following the high-profile theft of priceless jewels from the Louvre Museum in Paris on Sunday.
The Italian Ministry of Culture confirmed on Monday that the security of the nation’s cultural assets has become a top priority.
The ministry revealed two EU-funded pilot projects worth more than €70 million aimed at strengthening the protection of historical artefacts and museum collections across the country.
According to the ministry, the new initiatives will utilise intelligent video analytics and AI algorithms capable of detecting unusual behaviour or suspicious movements around artefacts. These systems will generate predictive alerts to enhance prevention and surveillance while maintaining strict data privacy standards.
Officials stated that the integration of AI into Italy’s museum security marks a major step toward modernising heritage protection and preventing future incidents similar to the Louvre heist.
