Italy is set to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games from 6 to 22 February, bringing together elite athletes from around the world for one of the largest global sporting events.

The Games will be staged across two main host cities, Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, highlighting both Italy’s major urban centres and its iconic Alpine landscapes.

The upcoming Winter Olympics will feature competitions across 16 winter sports, including ice skating, ice hockey and curling, alongside a wide range of mountain-based events to be held in the scenic alpine resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Around 3,000 athletes from 90 countries are expected to compete, with a total of 116 medals to be awarded across the full programme of events. The scale of participation underscores the global significance of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Games within the international sporting calendar.

The opening ceremony, scheduled to take place at the San Siro stadium in Milan, is set to be a major highlight of the Games. Organisers have announced large-scale artistic performances, with international music stars including Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli expected to take part.

The 2026 edition will also introduce a new sport for the first time: ski mountaineering. The discipline combines uphill climbing on skis with high-speed downhill racing, adding a new endurance-based and technical event to the Olympic programme.

Core sports at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics will include alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, curling, ice hockey, figure skating, freestyle skiing, bobsleigh, ski jumping and speed skating, offering a comprehensive showcase of winter sports at the highest competitive level.
