Italy confirmed on Wednesday, that its troops in Iraq are "safe", after Tehran missile attacks on two Iraqi military bases hosting U.S. military and coalition personnel at Al-Assad and Irbil, in response to the assassination of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani.
Italian Defence Minister Lorenzo Guerini had a "frank and articulate" phone call with US Defence Secretary Mark Esper about the situation in Iraq, his ministry said in a statement.
Guerini appealed to the US for "moderation, dialogue and the sense of responsibility with which the complexity of the current situation in Iraq must be managed."
It is worth mentioning that, Iran launched missile attacks on two Iraqi military bases hosting U.S.-led coalition personnel in revenge for the U.S. killing last week of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani.
At least 80 ‘American terrorists’ were killed in Iranian missile attacks on U.S. targets in Iraq, according to Iran’s state TV.
In his first response after the Iranian attack, U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted, “All is well! missiles launched from Iran at two military bases located in Iraq. Assessment of casualties & damages taking place now. So far, so good!”
He also added that he will deliver a statement on the Iranian attack Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, the White House released a statement about the Iranian attack saying that US President Donald Trump is monitoring the situation.
Moreover, the Pentagon said in a statement: “It is clear that these missiles were launched from Iran and targeted at least two Iraqi military bases hosting U.S. military and coalition personnel at Al-Assad and Irbil.”
“We are working on initial battle damage assessments,” the Pentagon went on saying.
