Italy’s Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that 16 Italian nationals are missing following a deadly fire and explosion at a ski resort in southwestern Switzerland, raising fears of further casualties as emergency operations continue.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed the figures in televised remarks, stating that several other people were seriously injured in the incident. Swiss authorities earlier reported multiple fatalities and injuries after an explosion triggered a fire at the resort, though the exact number of victims has not yet been officially confirmed.
Tajani said he plans to travel to Crans-Montana on Friday to assess the situation firsthand and to be close to the families of the missing. “If it does not cause any disruption, I will be at the site of the tragedy tomorrow or the day after, to stand close to our fellow citizens,” he said.
The Italian foreign minister added that he has been in frequent contact with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who is personally following developments surrounding the incident. Italian diplomatic and consular services have been activated to coordinate with Swiss authorities and assist affected families.
Swiss police confirmed that the fire followed an explosion at the ski resort, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving firefighters, medical teams, and search units. Rescue operations are ongoing amid difficult conditions, with authorities working to determine the cause of the explosion and confirm the identities of the victims.
The incident has sparked concern in Italy, where officials are urging Italian citizens in the area to remain in contact with local authorities. Further updates are expected as search and identification efforts continue in Switzerland.
