Italian far-right politician Giorgia Meloni, leader of the Brothers of Italy party, was sworn in today (Saturday) in front of President Sergio Ma Tarella as prime minister of the country, becoming the first woman to hold this position in Italian history. The ministers of her new government were also sworn in at the Quirinale Palace in Rome.

In the wake of last month's elections, the country appears poised to be ruled by a coalition that includes the far-right League and the centre-right Forza Italia, according to the German news agency DPA.

The current interim prime minister, Mario Draghi, is scheduled to hand over his duties to Meloni at Chigi Palace, the official residence of Italian prime ministers, tomorrow (Sunday), when the government is expected to hold its first meeting.

And the government of the 45-year-old prime minister still has to be confirmed, through a vote of confidence, in Parliament, which according to observers, may happen as soon as the beginning of next week.
