Italy is taking precautionary steps to protect crucial global trade corridors by preparing to relocate two naval minesweepers closer to the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking before parliament on Wednesday, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced that the two minehunter units are being pre-positioned to respond to regional maritime threats. The vessels will be deployed in a staggered approach, moving first to the Eastern Mediterranean and subsequently to the Red Sea.

The move comes as international concerns rise over freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply transits. The strategic waterway has faced severe disruptions and an effective blockade following geopolitical escalations earlier this year, alongside accusations that sea mines have been laid in the area.

However, Italian officials emphasized that the movement does not signal the immediate launch of a new independent military campaign. Minister Crosetto underscored that any actual operational deployment in the Strait would be strictly conditional on international diplomatic developments, requiring a legal framework, a credible and lasting peace agreement in the region, and prior formal approval from the Italian Parliament.

"Solely as a precaution, we are arranging for two minehunter units to be positioned relatively closer to the Strait," Crosetto told lawmakers, framing the strategic relocation within existing parliamentary authorized operations like Safe Mediterranean and Mission Aspides.

The deployment is part of a broader multinational discussion involving roughly 40 countries, with dozens already indicating a willingness to provide specialized naval support, ships, and mine-neutralization personnel to ensure safe passage for global shipping.
