Italy is considering a long-term strategy to repurpose part of its automobile manufacturing sector for defense production, according to reports from Corriere della Sera on Saturday.
The initiative, reportedly spanning a decade, aims to strengthen Italy’s economy as European nations ramp up defense spending.
NATO member states have already committed to allocating 2% of their GDP to defense, but former US President Donald Trump has pushed for an increase to 5%.
The European Commission estimates that additional defense investments required over the next ten years could reach about €500 billion ($513 billion).
If implemented, Italy’s shift toward military production could position the country as a key player in Europe’s evolving defense landscape.
